Progress Dashboard

Where have we been?

Where have we been?

Where are we now?

Phase 1 Phase 2 Phase 3

Phase 1 (2016)

We recruited stakeholders to analyze the problem, created a beginning set of system elements, and began considering a framework for a Detroit community development system.

Phase 2 (2017-2018)

We formed an Advisory Council, conducted extensive research resulting in a specific set of challenges and created Task Forces to respond to those challenges and develop test-projects for most of the elements.

Phase 3 (2019-2020)

Stakeholders will champion elements of the system, working closely with CDOs and GROs, by “test-piloting” project ideas:

  • Coordination of Capacity Building Services
  • Community Development Career Navigation Model
  • Neighborhood Vitality Success Framework
  • Neighborhood Voice and Advocacy Framework
  • At least two city-CDO funded partnerships

Simultaneously we will:

  • Activate the System Capitalization element
  • Establish a governance/oversight structure
  • Develop a process to resolve CDO coverage for all neighborhoods

Building the Case for Change with Building Movement Projects

December 29, 2021January 1, 2022

Thank you for being a part of our community. All through the month of December, we have been highlighting four key ways that BMP’s work supports, channels, and fuels nonprofits, movements, and the sector to make change. And as we approach the end of 2021, we are asking for your support.

This week’s theme is Building the Case for Change.

At the Building Movement Project (BMP), we push the sector to move beyond talk to make lasting, meaningful change through our Race to Lead research and data, which serves as the basis of our reports and of our forthcoming racial equity assessment for nonprofits. We believe in making the case with information.
It was almost a decade ago that BMP started asking the question: Why are there so few leaders of color in the nonprofit sector?” We conducted interviews, read the non-profit (and for-profit) literature, and talked with our colleagues. Everyone had ideas, but no one had data.
So in 2016 we launched the first Race to Lead survey. When we analyzed the data from more than 4,000 respondents working in the nonprofit sector, what we found reflected the lived experience of so many leaders of color. People of color and white respondents had similar training and education, and people of color were more likely to aspire to nonprofit leadership. However, respondents agreed that people of color faced racialized barriers to advancement. A similar survey in 2019 of over 5,000 nonprofit staffers showed similar results. As we look ahead to 2022, we’re excited to launch a third iteration of the Race to Lead survey and to support nonprofit staff across the country in sharing their stories and experiences of working in the sector and advancing change.
Data is also at the heart of our new Race Equity Assessment which will be launched next year. The assessment is a tool developed by the Building Movement Project (BMP) to help nonprofits better understand the foundational capacities for building more racially equitable workplaces.
Rather than auditing an organization’s policies, processes, and procedures, the assessment is based on staff experiences in four key capacities – Learning, Leadership, Conversation, and Voice – that are fundamental for organizations engaging in racial equity work. BMP generates a customized visual and narrative report based on an analysis of the aggregated staff responses. The report is shaped by BMP’s algorithms, which identify where the organization has developed capacity, as well as room for growth.
Data, information, and tools for making real change are at the heart of the Building Movement Project’s work. Support us in building a strong social justice ethos into the nonprofit sector. Please make a donation today.
