Phase 1 Phase 2 Phase 3

Phase 1 (2016)

We recruited stakeholders to analyze the problem, created a beginning set of system elements, and began considering a framework for a Detroit community development system.

Phase 2 (2017-2018)

We formed an Advisory Council, conducted extensive research resulting in a specific set of challenges and created Task Forces to respond to those challenges and develop test-projects for most of the elements.

Phase 3 (2019-2020)

Stakeholders will champion elements of the system, working closely with CDOs and GROs, by “test-piloting” project ideas:

  • Coordination of Capacity Building Services
  • Community Development Career Navigation Model
  • Neighborhood Vitality Success Framework
  • Neighborhood Voice and Advocacy Framework
  • At least two city-CDO funded partnerships

Simultaneously we will:

  • Activate the System Capitalization element
  • Establish a governance/oversight structure
  • Develop a process to resolve CDO coverage for all neighborhoods

Apply for CDAD’s Youth Advisory Council

CDAD’s Youth Engagement Partners invite Detroit area youth to apply for the CDAD Youth Advisory Council. The purpose of the council is for youth from different areas of Detroit to come together to identify their needs and the needs of their communities, and come up with action-based solutions by:

1.     Increasing youth awareness about what community development is and what it looks like in Detroit

2.     Developing leadership skills and leading projects that will positively impact Detroit communities

3.     Creating opportunities for youth to provide input about development happening in their communities

4.     Building effective youth-adult partnerships to advocate for equitable and inclusive community development

The CDAD Youth Advisory Council is looking for:

  • Youth ages 13 to 18
  • Youth who are connected to the city of Detroit (live, go to school, work, or engage in extra-curricular activities in Detroit)
  • Youth interested in learning more about and getting involved in community development
  • Youth who want to strengthen their leadership skills
  • Youth who are committed to working together to create positive change in Detroit communities

Expectations of Youth Advisory Council Members:

  • Attendance at virtual orientation in early December 2020
  • Attendance at monthly meetings from January — August 2021
  • Additional committee meetings as needed
  • Active participation in meetings and communication in between meetings (We will continue to monitor and adhere to COVID-19 meeting requirements. All meetings will be virtual until further notice)
  • Completion of a community project to be determined by the council
  • Mutual respect for all council members and facilitators
