Where have we been?

Where have we been?

Where are we now?

Phase 1 Phase 2 Phase 3

Phase 1 (2016)

We recruited stakeholders to analyze the problem, created a beginning set of system elements, and began considering a framework for a Detroit community development system.

Phase 2 (2017-2018)

We formed an Advisory Council, conducted extensive research resulting in a specific set of challenges and created Task Forces to respond to those challenges and develop test-projects for most of the elements.

Phase 3 (2019-2020)

Stakeholders will champion elements of the system, working closely with CDOs and GROs, by “test-piloting” project ideas:

  • Coordination of Capacity Building Services
  • Community Development Career Navigation Model
  • Neighborhood Vitality Success Framework
  • Neighborhood Voice and Advocacy Framework
  • At least two city-CDO funded partnerships

Simultaneously we will:

  • Activate the System Capitalization element
  • Establish a governance/oversight structure
  • Develop a process to resolve CDO coverage for all neighborhoods

Join the Coalition for Property Tax Justice as We Meet with Detroit City Council to Discuss and Get Their Support to Compensate Residents Who Were Illegally Over-assessed by Over $600 million

Hello!

We are reaching out to you as a member of the Coalition for Property Tax Justice. As you know, the City of Detroit continues to systematically over assess homeowners, leading to illegally high property taxes. As part of our work to stop this problem, the Coalition is fighting to pass a city law that would compensate people who have been impacted by illegal over assessments and property tax foreclosures.

Click here to read about the compensation proposal and sign the Action Network petition demanding that Mayor Duggan compensate impacted homeowners.

We would like to invite you to join our fight for compensation and property tax justice. One way to get involved is to attend one or more of the meetings we are having with City Councilmembers over the next couple of weeks. The purpose of these meetings is to present our policy demands, share stories about how illegal property tax assessments have impacted residents, and get their support for a compensation ordinance. The meetings start on Monday and will happen over the next few weeks on Zoom.

The meetings are on Tuesday, 4/13 from 3:30–4:30 with CM Ayers, Wednesday, 4/14 from 3–4 with CM Spivey, with the remaining dates TBD. If you are interested in receiving the Zoom link and times for the City Councilmember meetings, please email illegalforeclosures.detroit@gmail.com or call/text (313)438‑8698.

If you are unable to attend these upcoming meetings but would like to still be involved in the fight for compensation, we’d love to hear from you at the email or phone number above! To stay informed about all of the work the Coalition for Property Tax Justice is up to, text justice” to (248) 817‑1781.
