Phase 1 (2016)

We recruited stakeholders to analyze the problem, created a beginning set of system elements, and began considering a framework for a Detroit community development system.

Phase 2 (2017-2018)

We formed an Advisory Council, conducted extensive research resulting in a specific set of challenges and created Task Forces to respond to those challenges and develop test-projects for most of the elements.

Phase 3 (2019-2020)

Stakeholders will champion elements of the system, working closely with CDOs and GROs, by “test-piloting” project ideas:

  • Coordination of Capacity Building Services
  • Community Development Career Navigation Model
  • Neighborhood Vitality Success Framework
  • Neighborhood Voice and Advocacy Framework
  • At least two city-CDO funded partnerships

Simultaneously we will:

  • Activate the System Capitalization element
  • Establish a governance/oversight structure
  • Develop a process to resolve CDO coverage for all neighborhoods

Position Opening: CDAD Director of Member Engagement and Special Projects

Status: Exempt; Salaried; Full Time
Reports to: Executive Director
Position Summary:
CDAD is seeking an experienced and qualified candidate for the position of Director of Member Engagement and Special Projects. This position will provide leadership and strategic planning to develop CDAD’s member services and recruitment, engaging members in all of CDAD’s work, and leading a number of special projects’ designed in response to an iterative engagement process with our members. These projects include community planning efforts, community engagement learning community, neighborhood-based coalition building, and others as they arise through member engagement.
The Director of Member Engagement and Special Projects is an ideal position for candidates who are results oriented, innovative, and who thrive on program design and implementation. This position works directly with CDAD executive director and supervises CDAD’s community engagement associate.
They also work closely with other CDAD staff to ensure programming is aligned with the complex needs of our members and is keeping up with changes in the sector.
Responsibilities:
  • Design and implement member renewal, recruitment and retention process.
  • Organize CDAD’s member convenings, including an annual community development week.
  • Oversee CDAD’s collaborative community engagement strategy.
  • Ensure the delivery of relevant and desirable programming for members.
  • Design and implement a number of special projects, including but not limited to neighborhood planning efforts, development of a community engagement learning community, place-based resiliency and emergency preparedness, and research related to a number of potential projects
  • Develop member services committee and engage with CDAD’s board of directors when necessary.
  • Other duties as assigned
Qualifications Desired:
  • Experience designing and implementing a complex array of programs and services.
  • Experience with member organizations and Detroit’s community development sector.
  • Experience with participatory neighborhood planning and coalition building.
  • Understanding of adult learning and diverse delivery modes, including strong group facilitation skills.
  • Experience supervising staff, volunteers, interns and AmeriCorps members.
  • Ability to lead the coordination of cross-departmental efforts.
  • Ability to build and maintain strong partner relationships.
  • Ability to work during typical office hours, with occasional evening/weekend work, and periodic travel
  • Commitment to advancing diversity, equity/inclusion, including personal and organizational growth.
  • At least 5 years’ experience in program development that engaged a variety of different stakeholders
  • Strong ability to work with neighborhood-based coalitions and organizations with experience in providing technical assistance with coalition building
  • Experience developing and implementing new programs across sectors and across cultures with demonstrated experience of leading through an equity lens
  • Ability to thrive while managing multiple projects and tasks
  • Experience working with Microsoft Office, social media platforms, and ability to create visually appealing engagement materials
