“We’re just at the beginning. The bumpy part has yet to happen.”
“I can’t even foresee the breadth and depth of the continued suffering at the community level.”
“When we get out of this, six months later, a huge disproportionate number of leaders of color will disappear from this work because of the burnout.” |

These reflections from people of color (POC) who lead nonprofits are part of a new report being released today by the Building Movement Project and SolidarityIs. Our national report, On the Frontlines: Nonprofits Led by People of Color Confront COVID-19 and Structural Racism, is based on an online survey of 433 executive directors and one-on-one interviews with 41 leaders.
Building Movement Project’s report makes five key findings with one overarching message: it is clear that there will be no return to normalcy in the wake of the pandemic, economic instability, and the national uprisings to address anti-Black racism. Leaders of color are concerned that the crisis will get worse in the months ahead as their organizations adapt programs and activities to make up for government gaps. At the same time, POC leaders are motivated by the uprisings and the possibility of meaningful systemic change.

Building Movement Project is grateful to the many executive directors who shared their experiences with them, and are inspired by their commitment to their organizations and communities. They encourage you to read and share the report, use the recommendations, and attend their October 20th webinar. |
