Where have we been?

Where have we been?

Where are we now?

Phase 1 Phase 2 Phase 3

Phase 1 (2016)

We recruited stakeholders to analyze the problem, created a beginning set of system elements, and began considering a framework for a Detroit community development system.

Phase 2 (2017-2018)

We formed an Advisory Council, conducted extensive research resulting in a specific set of challenges and created Task Forces to respond to those challenges and develop test-projects for most of the elements.

Phase 3 (2019-2020)

Stakeholders will champion elements of the system, working closely with CDOs and GROs, by “test-piloting” project ideas:

  • Coordination of Capacity Building Services
  • Community Development Career Navigation Model
  • Neighborhood Vitality Success Framework
  • Neighborhood Voice and Advocacy Framework
  • At least two city-CDO funded partnerships

Simultaneously we will:

  • Activate the System Capitalization element
  • Establish a governance/oversight structure
  • Develop a process to resolve CDO coverage for all neighborhoods

Nominate a Detroit Youth for the Skillman President’s Youth Council

September 25, 2020 @ 4:30 pm - 5:00 pm

Skillman is seeking Detroit youth who will share their insights and ideas to help shape the Foundation’s efforts to improve and expand educational and economic opportunities for young Detroiters as part of the Skillman President’s Youth Council.

As a fierce champion of Detroit children, young people’s perspectives are invaluable to informing their work and influencing the direction of our city. Detroit is their birthright. To this end, Youth Council participants will grow their leadership skills and network through the program, helping them expand their influence and voice beyond their involvement with the Foundation.

They are looking for dedicated and passionate young people to participate on their 10-person Youth Council for a two-year term, beginning in November 2020. Members will meet with President and CEO, Tonya Allen, and other Foundation leaders formally two to three times per year and informally on a rolling basis.

Council Members will:

  • Discuss issues and ideas that are significant to them and their peers
  • Learn about the role of philanthropy in advancing social change and how foundations operate
  • Learn about and provide input to help inform The Skillman Foundation’s strategies, goals, initiatives, and investments
  • Gather insights and feedback from other young people

Members will be compensated for their work and will engage with youth and community leaders from across the city.

Information about the nomination process can be found at skillman.org/pyc.
Nominators must complete a short questionnaire about the nominee’s experiences, abilities, and dedication. Youth can self-nominate. The deadline for nominations is September 25, 2020 at 5:00 p.m.

This is an opportunity to help shape the supports and opportunities available to Detroit youth, including schools and afterschool programming, college and career, and general safety, happiness, well-being and ability to drive a future of their choosing. Youth Council members will deepen their involvement in the community, the philanthropic sector, and social changemaking.

Questions about the Council and the application process can be directed to Jessica Eiland Anders, special projects manager, at 313–393-1169 or jeiland@skillman.org.
