Where have we been?

Where have we been?

Where are we now?

Phase 1 Phase 2 Phase 3

Phase 1 (2016)

We recruited stakeholders to analyze the problem, created a beginning set of system elements, and began considering a framework for a Detroit community development system.

Phase 2 (2017-2018)

We formed an Advisory Council, conducted extensive research resulting in a specific set of challenges and created Task Forces to respond to those challenges and develop test-projects for most of the elements.

Phase 3 (2019-2020)

Stakeholders will champion elements of the system, working closely with CDOs and GROs, by “test-piloting” project ideas:

  • Coordination of Capacity Building Services
  • Community Development Career Navigation Model
  • Neighborhood Vitality Success Framework
  • Neighborhood Voice and Advocacy Framework
  • At least two city-CDO funded partnerships

Simultaneously we will:

  • Activate the System Capitalization element
  • Establish a governance/oversight structure
  • Develop a process to resolve CDO coverage for all neighborhoods

The D’s Next Decade: Advancing Equity | Detroit Homecoming

September 21, 2020 - September 25, 2020

Since 2014, Detroit Homecoming has created a three-day, invitation-only event with year-round impact aimed at inspiring expats” to re-engage with the city’s revitalization. The economic impact tied to attendees is more than $600 million, mostly real estate investments.

COVID-19 and the need for social distancing will alter the event in 2020, which will be expanded to five days, Sept. 21–25. Big-stage” speakers will for the most part be virtual” on Sept. 21–23. Tours and neighborhood immersions on Sept. 24–25 will be capped at 50 people each, with an effort to keep as much as possible outdoors. A larger public will be invited to an outdoor bazaar, featuring many local makers and retailers. Detroit Homecoming will sponsor restaurant takeovers” that meet state guidelines for social distancing, grouping attendees by their special interests.

Recognizing that the biggest pool of Detroit expats” may very well be in Detroit’s suburbs, Detroit Homecoming VII will invite people in Southeast Michigan with ties to Detroit to join our traditional expat” audience. This year, Detroit Homecoming goes local.” In small, socially distanced groups, guests can meet people who are key to Detroit’s revitalization – in neighborhoods, in restaurants and in key areas targeted for improvement.

Detroit Homecoming plans a hybrid experience – big name” speakers attending virtually and on-the-ground experiences for locals as well as expats who decide to make the trip.

All virtual activities are free for all attendees. Locals will be charged $99 for Thursday’s in-person tours and dinner. Expats are complimentary for the tours and dinner.
